Phang Nga Bay Regatta gets a New Name The Bay Regatta — Phuket - Phang Nga - Krabi is the new name for the well-known Phang Nga Bay Regatta which has run for the past 13 years. A new name does not signify and major changes to the event, which will continue to run each year in early February through the three provinces now reflected in its new name. Including the names of all three provinces, not just one, is the real reason for the change. Often the event spends more time in Phuket and Krabi provinces than in Phang Nga itself. Thus, to allow the event to capitalize fully on potential cooperation and sponsorship, the names of Phuket and Krabi need to be included in the event title. The regatta typically attracts 40 to 50 yachts each year, making it one of the biggest and most popular sailing events in Asia. Unlike most other regattas, this event takes the fleet through the spectacular scenery of Phang Nga Bay to a new anchorage each evening, holding awards parties in a wide variety of different locations. Some evening parties take place on beaches, some in high-class resorts or in local village restaurants. The participants have to sleep on their boats. Often billed ‘Asia’s fun regatta’, the hallmark of this event is the casual, fun-filled atmosphere. Many families sail the four-day course. While the sailing is be serious for many racing class yachts, a large number of cruisers join for the experience of sailing through some of the world’s most amazing maritime scenery. |
