Recording Your Sailing Experiences

Going sailing for the first time is one of those remarkable experiences people often want to record and remember after having partaken in the fun. However, sailing requires full attention paid to the experience itself, and any effort expended or attention wasted on handling a camcorder can result in increased risk of injury, not to mention a less fulfilling, unengaged sailing experience. If you want to save your memories of this adventure without having to devote your attention to two different things at once, consider using a helmet cam.

Designed to sit securely on your head no matter the activity, from bicycle riding to rock climbing, a helmet camera is a device that keeps your hands free while it also records your every move. Locked into place, the camera will jolt around more than your typical one operated by hand, but it will be a lot steadier than you’d expect. Plus, with your hands free to handle any task required of you, you won’t have to balance camera operation with other important sailing maneuvers that you really should be devoting most of your time and attention to.

Helmet cams aren’t perfect devices. You will get some jarring motions that are unpleasant to watch, so you’ll have to be adept at editing out unusable footage. Furthermore, all of the shots you take with your cam will be in the first person perspective, so while you may get footage of your hands, feet, and other extremities, don’t expect to see a whole lot of the rest of yourself in the final piece.

There are many advantages to this approach, however. First off, a first person perspective will help you better remember what it was really like to be sailing yourself. Second, you’ll really get to invest in your first-time sailing experience, so your memories of the event might be more fine-tuned. If you had to operate a camera and the sails simultaneously, chances are you’d miss out on a lot on both ends, and you’d be so overwhelmed with new information that it would be hard to gain perspective from the experience you’re engaging in.

So if capturing digital memories is something essential for you to have a positive sailing experience, strap on the helmet cam and allow yourself the opportunity to have high quality footage at the same time you focus completely on the new experience you’re having.
